SCHOOL HISTORY
The American International School of Abuja was founded in 1993 when a group of parents and U.S. Embassy officials recognized the need for a school that would adequately prepare students who reside in Nigeria to continue their education in American schools overseas.
The FCDA (Federal Capital Development Authority) gave permission to use one section of the Model Secondary School compound as a temporary site, and for the past 12 years classes have been conducted on that site. The 2006-2007 school year is a landmark for AISA, as our long-awaited dream of having our own campus becomes a reality and we move into our new permanent site in the Durumi District of Abuja.
In August 2006 we opened the school year in the new facility, with brand-new classrooms, some familiar and some new teachers, and some familiar and some new students. Building on our success of previous years, our students are enjoying a very positive school experience at AISA.
The faculty and administration are committed to individualizing the learning experiences as necessary to ensure the success of all students. This necessitates differentiation of assignments, method of instruction, and assessment to accommodate each student's needs. We currently offer classes for students in Preschool (3-year-olds) through Grade 12.
SCHOOL FUTURE
Over the past few years, the board, administration and faculty have recognized and addressed the fact that there are no American curriculum high schools available in Abuja .
Therefore, in the 2005-2006 school year, the decision was made to add a full high school program and to have it fully functional and accredited through Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools within three years. Grade 10 was implemented in the 2006-2007 school year. In order to accommodate this addition, five teachers were hired from the United States , new classrooms were equipped, and textbooks, workbooks, and supporting curricular materials were purchased from the United States .
Grade 11 was offered in the 2007-2008 school year, and Grade 12 was added in the 2008-2009 school year, to fulfill our commitment of offering an full high school program. The accreditation process was completed and Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 have been fully accredited by Middle States. A guidance counselor has been hired from the United States and is currently on the staff to ensure that all high school students take the courses required for graduation and to assist with the college application and admission process.
